Brixton is one of London’s most vibrant areas with a down-to-earth vibe that has made it one of the must-visit spots in the city. The area is infused with Caribbean culture – so it’s no surprise that you’ll find The Rum Kitchen there.
The area is pedestrian-friendly and full of vintage stores, street food, and entertainment venues.
If you’re a local or new to the area, Brixton is the perfect spot to visit with friends, and family. As Brixton locals, we’re sharing some of our top recommendations of things to do in Brixton.
Tour Brixton Market
Brixton Market is an excellent first stop on your visit to Brixton. This pedestrianised area of Electric Avenue plays home to hundreds of stalls that are spread across the surrounding arcades.
Brixton Market made a name for itself in the 20s and 30s before becoming home to West Indian food and Caribbean culture in the 70s and 80s.
As the market has continued to grow, it’s become even more international. You’re guaranteed to find something that catches your eye at Brixton Market – whether it’s vintage music vinyls, antiques, or handmade clothing.
Catch a gig at Brixton Academy
One thing that attracts tourists and locals alike to Brixton is the iconic Brixton Academy. This venue holds almost 5,000 people and has played host to everyone, from Bob Dylan to the White Stripes and the Sex Pistols.
If you’re a fan of rock, there’s no better venue in London for you. If you’re lucky, you may get a chance to grab a ticket to see your favourite band perform.

Catch a movie at Ritzy Cinema
If you’re a movie buff, you’ll be at home at the Ritzy Cinema. It’s one of the oldest purpose-built cinemas in the country and originally opened as the ‘Electric Pavilion’ in the early 1910s.
It’s one of the few cinemas from that era still in operation today. The building got a facelift in 2009 to restore it to its original Edwardian look.
Ritzy Cinema is now run by Picturehouse, known for showing independent and international movies alongside Hollywood blockbusters. The building also converts into a music and comedy venue, known as ‘Upstairs at the Ritzy’.
