Happy Windrush Day

Today marks Windrush Day and we at the Rum Kitchen would like to pay homage and celebrate the culture and contributions of the British Caribbean community, who make our mission statement of ‘Be More Carnival’ possible. The essence of togetherness, journey, good food and music are all hallmarks of our company mission, quite in the likeness of this community whose soundtracks are both resilient and inclusive. We know our teams, guests, brand partners and the wider public will join us in celebrating this fourth anniversary and pause on its importance.

SS Empire Windrush arrives in London carrying imigrants from the Caribbean.

The 22nd June 1948 marked the arrival of the SS Empire Windrush, the ship that has come to usher in the story of our multicultural Britain. The history is more complex than that of course, however 73 years to the day, the Windrush arrived at Tilbury Docks in Essex carrying the first Caribbean migrants to the UK called upon to help re-build Britain after the Second World War – much has changed, though more progress needed. The continuing injustices of the Windrush Scandal make this clear and demonstrate the need for a true recollection on the history of Britain in the world and its relation to the Caribbean community in particular.

The Rum Kitchen is for everyone and the Caribbean Community above all has welcomed the wider community into their culture much to the joy of us all, May we reflect on their struggles and sacrifices from Slavery, during the World Wars and more recently when they answered the call of duty and paved the way for a more inclusive Britain today.

To the community elders and their descendants, from us at RK to the Caribbean Community – Thank you and Happy Windrush day!
